The Nephilim
The Nephilim (2022) is a dance piece which I choreographed, scored, and performed in. It was an effort to hyper-realize personhood into figures of pure representation. A complex web of relationships tell a story of lust, awe, terror, and power. We are both giant and tiny, strong and weak, scared and terrifying. Through a rigorous attention to the ways in which quality of movement produces mood, the dancers are transformed into icons.
The title of the piece is a reference to the early Christian scripture The Book Of Enoch, where bastard children of angels and humans, called Nephilim, wreak havoc upon the earth. I used this story as inspiration to create larger than life figures, both horrifying and sublime.
